Demonstrations for Spinning Wool, Dyeing Thread, & Weaving
Rugs
Serving the Nation from Cleveland, Ohio
Contact the
South Boulevard Historical Society for the
demonstration of spinning wool into thread, dyeing thread, and
weaving it into rugs and throws. We will bring our spinning wheels
into historic downtown, to a museum, or anywhere else to
demonstrate the process of spinning wool, as well as demonstrating
weaving designs and patterns from the pre-Civil War era in relation
to the Underground Railroad and their communication system. We show
how natural dyes from leaves, barks, berries, and red and yellow
onion skins make different colors in the wool. Our demonstrations
are typically outdoors, but can be held indoors as
well. Visit our demonstrations for spinning wool and
dyeing thread. |
Our Underground
Railroad Communication Patterns Include: | Bear's Paw • Bow
Tie • Crossroads • Drunkard's Path • Flying Geese • Log Cabin Monkey Wrench • Shoo Fly • Star • Tumbling Blocks • Wagon
Wheel |
We schedule
demonstrations for Civil War events, classrooms, and in the
historic district for tourists. We have more than 12 wheels that
are all different (due to the lack of interchangeable parts) from
before the 1860s. Because of the care they've been given, all of
our spindles and wheels still work! Some of the wheels are
considered "Shaker" wheels due to the style. The makers have even
signed some wheels. |
Come Learn &
Have Fun In addition to our wool spinning
demonstrations, we also demonstrate wood burning stoves and how to
use different wood to fuel the fire and cook. We usually have
antiques and antique tools with us for you to explore and examine
and purchase if you'd like. And we charter bus trips to the
Underground Railroad sites in Ohio. These trips are tentatively
planned for summer of 2006 and we may even have some traveling
events in the future in which we will visit other historical sites,
so come with us! Our owner has been spinning for 35 years and there
is no admission charge for our demonstrations. |
